OBSG Open House Day, OBSG

Date and Time: Saturday  – 7 MAY 2011 –  14:00 hrs.

In the community where I live, OBSG, we had a nice party named “Open House Day” today. In this event, international music & dance performances were presented by people of different countries, and finger foods of different countries were also supplied. Pictures of the party are posted as follows.

Happy Easter in OBSG

April is a busy month, but also a leisure one for students, for it is almost a holiday month for them. In Belgium, students begin their Easter holiday from 11 April to 26th this year. However, as a PhD student, I am not so lucky, only 25th of April is an official holiday this year, which is today to celebrate Easter.

Since Easter is so important a holiday in western world, people normally have a habit to celebrate it, the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Last Sunday, 24th of April, in the community where I live now, OBSG, the great man Father Charles, he organized an Easter lunch for all residents who live in OBSG as well as his old friends. The lunch was primarily prepared by Piotr and his wife, who are a Belgium couple and also live in OBSG. As a Chinese, we also contributed a dish for the feast, it is called rice ball, with its Chinese name “Tang Yuan”, or “Yuan Xiao”. Here below are nice pictures of the lunch. Happy Easter! Happy everyday.

How Much to Buy Kindle in Europe?

中国Amazon账号点击这里购买亚马逊Kindle电子书阅读器美国Amazon账号点击这里购买亚马逊Kindle电子书阅读器

I planned to buy a Kindle 3 (3g+wifi) in Europe (Belgium) long long ago, since it is quite easy to pay using credit card and ship it via Amazon.com. Last Sunday, I tried to order one on the site, unfortunately, the price I have to pay (254.08 USD) is much higher than the stated one (189.00 USD) on the site when I was ready to pay the bill. Here is the bill information.

Kindle 3

Items: USD 189.00
Shipping & Handling: USD 20.98
Total Before Tax: USD 209.98
Estimated Tax To Be Collected: USD 0.00
Import Fees Deposit USD 44.10
Order Total: USD 254.08

Order Summary in EURO

Items: EUR 136,15
Shipping & Handling: EUR 15,11
Total Before Tax: EUR 151,26
Estimated Tax To Be Collected: EUR 0,00
Import Fees Deposit EUR 31,77
Order Total: EUR 183,03

If I choose euro as payment, it is even a bit more expensive, because the exchange rate (EURO/USD) Amazon.com applied is lower than the current.

So I think it is too expensive to buy a Kindle in Europe.Applicable Exchange Rate (Amazon applied): 1 USD = 0.720 EUR, But 1 U.S. dollar = 0.693 Euro (Source from Google today).

Visit a Belgium Friend

I have been staying in Belgium for more than one and a half years, but I has never been invited to a Belgium family, which of course cannot prove Belgium people are not hospitable,  actually I have not invited any Belgium friends to my place to have a Chinese dinner either, though I am very hospitable like most of Chinese people. The possible reason account for this could be that people with different cultures do not like to bother each other, that is human nature.

However, everything has a first time, and the world is experiencing  changes all the time. Last month, on the meeting organized by OBSG, I met a Belgium friend whose name is Georges, and he warmly invited me to visit his home. Finally, we fixed a date by email, which is 9 April.

Yesterday evening, we paid a visit to his home. Georges is a so friendly and hospitable gentleman, and he can speak French, Dutch, English. At his home, we talked leisurely. Meanwhile, Georges also showed us his beautiful garden, wine cellar (in his basement) and his china collections. In the end, Georges prepared us a typical Belgium diner, baked beef, salad, as well as cake as dessert with famous Belgium chocolate! Georges’s wife Beatrice is also a very nice and kind lady, she gave my son some toys to play, since they have four daughters (all are adults now) and she loves children very much, so they have a lot toys for children, When we were having dinner, she even found a baby chair for my little son to be seated, which made my son feel at home. It could not be better!

The Saturday evening was so happy and interesting, which will be kept in my mind all my life. And many thanks for Georges and Bealtrice, for their hospitality and friendly.

Belgium Evening Party

Last Friday evening, 25 March, the Belgian colleagues in our laboratory organized a party named “Belgium Evening” for all people (especially foreigners) in our lab.

In the year 2009, we Chinese colleagues prepared a “Chinese Evening” for them. Then, in 2010, the Latin group also had a party for all colleagues, at that moment the slogan of the party was “Bye-bye summer – dinner/party” because the summer in Belgium is short. Unfortunately, I was in Spain so I did not join the party.

At the party this time, Belgium colleagues made some typical Belgian food, beef cooked with beer, Belgium fry, famous Belgian beer, wine and chocolate were also supplied. Another interesting thing is they collected some typical and old-fashion game apparatus for us to play, so we can imagine how Belgium people make fun in the past.

In the end of the party, a funny quiz on basic Belgium knowledge was performed.

Thanks for the nice party by our nice Belgium colleagues; we do appreciate the hospitality and friendliness of Belgium. It is quite a small but very beautiful country.
